Director’s Statement
Inspired by bold, expressive films from the late 1990s and early aughts, such as Dancehall Queen and Black Swan, this film blends the camera’s point of view to include the audience in the ongoing fracture of self in an intimate and unsettling way. The evolution of the intricate role of AI is reminiscent of Her, pushing the boundaries of realities in this near-future science fiction short film, emphasizing the fear that this future isn’t ten years away; it’s tomorrow. Fusing Canadian and Jamaican cultural norms, restraint and collapse, and a sense of self that is yet to be fully actualized, Altered is a slow, unnerving burn.
Director’s Bio
Chanile Vines is a Toronto-based director, researcher, and storyteller whose work lives at the intersection of psychology, technology, and identity. Trained as a Research Scientist (MSc) and working in tech research, she brings a deep understanding of human behaviour into her filmmaking, translating human psychology to intentional storytelling in her debut short film, Altered: A Dancehall Queen.
As the writer, director, and lead of this film, she explores themes of performance, migration, transformation, identity, and the need to be whole. She has been deeply influenced by the identity shift she experienced when moving from Jamaica to Canada, navigating the fine dichotomy of the freedom and opportunities offered alongside feelings of limitation and being put in a box. Her work and creative endeavours, including this film, centre around giving back to her community and connecting to her authentic self.
